Corbin Carroll homers twice, Diamondbacks beat Nationals

corbin carroll

Corbin Carroll had his fifth career two-homer game and drove in three runs, Randal Grichuk’s two-run double broke a tie in the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Washington Nationals 6-4 on Friday.

CJ Abrams, Luis Garcia Jr. and Nathaniel Lowe homered for the Nationals, who have lost four in a row and have won once in seven games.

The Diamondbacks lost All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte to an apparent hamstring injury in the first inning, when he was removed after running to second base on a double off the center field fence.

Geraldo Perdomo had three hits and scored twice for Arizona, which has won four of their last five.

Abrams and Lowe had two hits apiece for the Nationals.

Justin Martinez gave up a two-out single in ninth before recording his first save.

Carroll’s second homer, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, gave Arizona a 4-3 lead before Lowe tied it off right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (1-1) in the last of the sixth with his third homer of the campaign.

Perdomo singled with one out in the seventh off Jose Ferrer (0-2) and took third on Hampson’s looping two-out single to right. Hampson entered as a pinch-runner for Marte.

Pinch-hitter Grichuk doubled off the fence in right field, just over Dylan Crews’ glove, to drive in two. Grichuk has four hits this season, all doubles.

Pfaadt, who signed a five-year, $45 million contract extension March 28, gave up four runs and six hits, including all three Nationals’ homers. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Nationals’ starter Jake Irvin gave up seven hits and four runs in five innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Josh Naylor singled in Hampson with two outs in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Abrams hit Pfaadt’s second pitch in the last of the first for his third home of the season. Lowe singled with two outs, and Garcia made it 3-1 with a 392-foot homer to right.

Carroll’s first homer with two outs in the third brought the Diamondbacks within one at 3-2.
