Dodgers RHP Dustin May (elbow) headed for IL

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Dustin May is headed to the 15-day injured list with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow and the timetable for his return is unknown.

May left his start Wednesday against the visiting Minnesota Twins after one inning with pain in his throwing elbow.

May was replaced by right-hander Dylan Covey, who just had his contract purchased by the Dodgers on Wednesday morning. Covey was making his first appearance in the major leagues since 2020.

May, 25, was having a standout start to the season with a 4-1 record and a 2.68 ERA over his first eight outings. He had a scoreless first inning against the Twins.

May returned late last season from Tommy John surgery in 2021 and was 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts.

In five seasons with the Dodgers, May is 12-9 with a 3.12 ERA in 45 outings (33 starts). He finished fifth in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2020 after posting a 3-1 record with a 2.57 ERA in 12 outings (10 starts).

Covey, 31, pitched for the Chicago White Sox from 2017-19 and the Boston Red Sox in 2020 and didn’t fare well. He was 6-29 with a 6.57 ERA in 71 appearances (45 starts) and gave up 305 hits and 116 walks in 264 1/3 innings.

Covey was 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) for Oklahoma City this season.

Also on Wednesday, the Dodgers optioned left-hander Justin Bruihl to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bruihl, 25, was 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA in nine games in relief this season for Los Angeles.

Los Angeles transferred right-hander Jimmy Nelson (elbow) to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot for Covey.
