Mike Yastrzemski’s timely hitting lifts Giants past Mariners

Mariners

Mike Yastrzemski went 3 for 5 with a double and home run as the San Francisco Giants defeated host Seattle 4-3 Saturday afternoon, handing new Mariners manager Dan Wilson his first loss.

Five Giants pitchers were effectively wild, combining on a four-hitter despite issuing nine walks.

Blake Snell didn’t allow a hit over the first three innings but was lifted after throwing 74 pitches. The Seattle native gave up two runs as he walked six and struck out five.

Spencer Bivens (3-1) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. Ryan Walker worked the ninth for his third save of the season.

The Giants scored in each of the first two innings against right-hander George Kirby (9-10).

Tyler Fitzgerald led off the game with a bunt single and Heliot Ramos was hit by a pitch. Michael Conforto walked to load the bases and Matt Chapman hit a sacrifice fly to left, with Randy Arozarena making a diving catch.

In the second, Thairo Estrada and Grant McCray led off with singles. With one out, Fitzgerald hit a soft liner down the left-field line to make it 2-0.

The Mariners tied it in the bottom of the inning as Snell issued five walks, including two with the bases loaded.

The Giants regained the lead in the fifth. With two outs, Yastrzemski doubled to right and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Estrada singled to left to make it 3-2.

With two outs in the seventh, Yastrzemski lined a solo shot just over the fence in right field.

The Mariners got that run back in the bottom of the inning as a pair of walks sandwiched around a ground-rule by Julio Rodriguez loaded the bases. Arozarena grounded into a fielder’s choice — a double play was overturned by a video review — to make it 4-3.

Kirby gave up three runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Mariners leadoff hitter Victor Robles left the game in the first inning after suffering a contusion on his right index finger while attempting to bunt.
