Red-hot Dodgers sweep Mariners

Jason Heyward went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double as the Los Angeles Dodgers shook off any after-effects of clinching their 10th division title in 11 seasons by defeating the host Seattle Mariners 6-1 Sunday afternoon.

Austin Barnes and James Outman also homered for the Dodgers (91-57), whose 6-2 victory in 11 innings Saturday night decided the National League West.

The Mariners (81-68) went 2-4 on their homestand against the two Los Angeles teams. They dropped 2 1/2 games behind Houston in the American League West and a game back of Texas in the race for the AL’s third and final wild-card playoff berth.

Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (8-6) pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief for the Dodgers, who swept the three-game interleague series. Yarbrough allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven after Shelby Miller pitched the opening inning. Rookie Gavin Stone worked 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for his first save.

Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (13-6) suffered his first loss since June 28, ending a streak of eight consecutive victories. Gilbert allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Heyward, who went 4-for-5 with three doubles in Saturday’s victory, gave the Dodgers the lead in the first inning with a one-out solo shot to right field.

Los Angeles extended the lead to 4-0 in the second as Amed Rosario hit a one-out triple to center and Kolten Wong, released by the Mariners on Aug. 3, lined an RBI single up the middle. Barnes followed by lining a two-run shot to left.

The Mariners scored their lone run in the bottom of the inning as Eugenio Suarez drew a one-out walk and Mike Ford and Ty France singled to load the bases. An out later, J.P. Crawford lined a run-scoring single to left before Yarbrough got Julio Rodriguez to hit a comebacker to the mound to end the threat.

The Dodgers added a run in the fourth as Rosario led off with a double to left, advanced to third on Wong’s groundout to the right side of the infield and scored on Heyward’s one-out single to right, making it 5-1.

Outman homered to straightaway center leading off the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
