Kerry Carpenter blasted his third home run in two days and drove in two runs as the host Detroit Tigers downed the visiting Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Spencer Torkelson supplied a solo homer and Riley Greene had two hits while scoring a run and knocking in another. Justin-Henry Malloy scored two runs and drove in another as the Tigers won for the fourth time in five games.
Detroit starter Reese Olson (1-1) allowed 10 baserunners in six innings but only gave up two runs while recording five strikeouts. Beau Brieske pitched a scoreless inning and John Brebbia finished up with two scoreless frames.
Andrew Vaughn had an RBI double for the White Sox and Korey Lee contributed three hits and a run. Starter Davis Martin (0-1) was tagged for all seven runs on nine hits in five innings as Chicago lost its fourth straight.
The White Sox pieced together a run in the first. Luis Robert walked and Andrew Benintendi advanced him with a single. Vaughn’s one-out double knocked in Robert but Olson escaped further damage with a strikeout and groundout.
Detroit moved ahead in the bottom of the inning. Malloy led off with a double and moved to third on Carpenter’s long flyout. Greene singled to right to bring him home.
A Torkelson double moved Greene to third. After a strikeout, Andy Ibanez’s infield single scored Greene.
Detroit made it 4-1 with two out in the second. Malloy drew a walk before Carpenter pulled a Martin pitch over the right field wall.
The Tigers added three runs in third. Torkelson led off with a homer to left. Colt Keith walked, Ibanez was hit by a pitch and Jake Rogers singled to load the bases. Trey Sweeney’s fielder’s-choice grounder scored Keith and Malloy’s sacrifice fly drove in Ibanez.
Chicago made it 7-2 in the fifth. The White Sox loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, and Lee scored on Robert’s double-play grounder.
