Elias Manoel scored the tying goal seven minutes into stoppage time shortly after being denied on a penalty kick as the New York Red Bulls salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw with visiting Atlanta United on Saturday night in Harrison, N.J.
The Red Bulls (10-6-14) salvaged the point thanks to Manoel’s heads-up play following a poor clearance by Atlanta. Julian Hall intercepted the ball, slid the ball to about the six-yard area for Manoel, who beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan from the center of the box.
Manoel scored his eighth goal 10 minutes after Guzan made a diving save on the forward’s second career penalty kick. Manoel was awarded the kick after video review overturned the original call of him committing a foul, but Guzan made a perfect read and used his right hand to make a diving save before the ball could get past the right post.
Manoel’s goal helped the Red Bulls remain in fourth in the Eastern Conference, but his inability to score on the penalty kick contributed to New York’s winless skid reaching five games (0-2-3) on a night when it attempted 22 shots and controlled possession for 60.4 percent of the contest.
Dante Vanzeir scored in the 31st minute for the Red Bulls, who experienced frustrating moments throughout, including after getting the tying goal. Following Manoel’s goal, Lewis Morgan was stopped by Guzan on a header and Dylan Nealis missed the net completely after being wide open.
New York goalie Carlos Coronel made just one save.
Alexey Miranchuk scored on a penalty kick late in the first half and Guzan finished with eight saves to help Atlanta (8-13-9) salvage a point for the second straight game.
New York controlled most of the first half but missed several scoring chances, including in the 12th minute, when Morgan was caught offside from close range. The Red Bulls finally got the lead in the 31st by keeping alive a loose ball.
John Tolkin played the end line and prevented the ball from going out of bounds. He flicked a pass to Vanzeir, who used his right foot to convert the tap-in from the center of the box.
After New York’s Felipe Carballo drew a yellow card for a foul inside the box, Miranchuk scored on the penalty kick by putting a left-footed shot by Coronel.
