Dynamic duo leads Minnesota United against Toronto FC

kelvin yeboah

Minnesota United will aim to extend their point streak to seven matches on Saturday afternoon when they visit winless Toronto FC.

The Loons (4-1-2, 14 points) rebounded from a season-opening setback to Los Angeles FC by piecing together points in their last six matches.

Tani Oluwaseyi boosted his team-leading goal total to five after scoring in Minnesota’s 2-1 victory over New York City FC last weekend. All five of the Canadian’s goals have come in his last three matches.

He’s not alone, however. Kelvin Yeboah has found the back of the net on four occasions, with the pair accounting for nine of the team’s 11 goals.

“What we’ve done so far this season has been based upon almost the desperation to find a way of getting Tani and Kelvin to play as a pair,” Minnesota manager Eric Ramsay said, per Goal.com. “It was something I really wanted to try and make work last year, but I didn’t feel like we had the time, the space, the sort of absence of the real pressure of that business end of the season in order to do so. Whereas I feel now like we’ve got to a really good point with those guys.”

Joaquin Pereyra notched a pair of assists and Canadian international Dayne St. Clair made three saves versus NYCFC.

While Minnesota is off to a fast start, Toronto FC (0-4-3, 3 points) stumbled out of the blocks — and literally are limping into this match to boot.

The Reds will be without injured defenders Nicksoen Gomis (undisclosed), Richie Laryea (hamstring), Henry Wingo (undisclosed) and Zane Monlouis (lower body) as well as forward Deandre Kerr (ankle) against the Loons.

Although winless, Toronto FC have been a game opponent on the heels of registering draws against the Vancouver Whitecaps and Inter Miami.

“I don’t think that our record reflects the way we have played recently,” Toronto FC first-year head coach Robin Fraser said. “We definitely feel like we’re doing a lot right. But we also know that we don’t have the results that we need to have.”
