The Charlotte Hornets will interview Mike D’Antoni in their search for a new head coach, ESPN reported Tuesday.
The two-time NBA Coach of the Year owns a 672-527 record in 16 seasons coaching five teams, including a stint with the Los Angeles Lakers (2012-14) when current Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak held the same role with the Lakers.
D’Antoni, who turns 71 on Sunday, spent the 2021-22 season as a coaching consultant for Willie Green with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Hornets parted ways last month with James Borrego, who guided the team to consecutive appearances in the play-in tournament and went 138-163 in four seasons.
Charlotte also reportedly requested permission to speak to several NBA assistant coaches whose teams are in the playoffs, including Kenny Atkinson of the Golden State Warriors, Darvin Ham of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Dallas Mavericks’ Sean Sweeney.
