NCAA athletes who participate in spring sports such as baseball, softball and track are expected to retain a year of eligibility because of the cancellation of those seasons in 2020.
The NCAA moved to cancel spring sports championships not long after ruling the NCAA Tournament and women’s tournament would not be played next week.
There has been no indication athletes who participated in winter sports but had championship competitions canceled will receive the same consideration.
“Council leadership agreed that eligibility relief is appropriate for all Division I student-athletes who participated in spring sports,” the NCAA said in a statement. “Details of eligibility relief will be finalized at a later time. Additional issues with NCAA rules must be addressed, and appropriate governance bodies will work through those in the coming days.”
The 2020 College World Series and Women’s College World Series, along with all other spring sports championships, are canceled.
The provision does not apply to sports such as football, where spring practice was eliminated or limited.
