brownell, Clemson

Naithan George had a team-high 28 points to go along with seven assists, leading visiting Georgia Tech to an 89-86 triple-overtime win against Clemson on Tuesday night in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Duncan Powell added 19 points and Baye Ndongo collected 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets (11-12, 5-7 ACC) won their second straight game. Lance Terry had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Ibrahim Souare chipped in nine points and 12 boards.

Chase Hunter had 28 points and Ian Schieffelin added 23 points and eight rebounds for Clemson (18-5, 10-2), which had its six-game winning streak come to an end. Chauncey Wiggins scored 15 points in the loss.

In the final overtime, Terry’s triple gave Georgia Tech an 83-80 lead, and the Yellow Jackets were later up 87-84 thanks to Ndongo’s hook shot with 1:57 left.

Hunter’s layup trimmed Clemson’s deficit to one with 29 seconds left. After Souare missed two free throws, Hunter lost the ball for a turnover with three seconds left. Ndongo buried a pair of foul shots to make it 89-86, and Hunter missed a potential game-tying triple as time expired.

Georgia Tech grabbed a 75-73 lead with 1:33 left in the second extra session on a putback layup from Ndongo. Schieffelin tied the game 10 seconds later with a layup of his own.

Hunter knocked down a midrange jumper with 32 seconds left before Souare’s dunk with 15 seconds to go knotted the game at 77. Hunter missed a 3-point attempt as time expired in the frame.

Neither team led by more than two points in the first overtime, with Hunter’s two free throws at the 2:27 mark of the period serving as the final points for either side.

Clemson seemingly had a victory all wrapped up, as it led 64-59 with 59 seconds to play in regulation. However, Powell knocked down a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining and made good on a layup at the buzzer after snatching an offensive board, sending the game to OT.

It was 34-33 Tigers at the break.
