No. 11 Clemson pulls away for win over Boston College

Clemson, Boston College

Jaeden Zackery scored a game-high 21 points and Chase Hunter finished with 18 points to lead No. 11 Clemson to a 78-69 victory over Boston College on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Zackery, who spent three seasons at Boston College before he transferred to Clemson, shot 7 of 12 from the field.

Viktor Lakhin added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers (25-5, 17-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who extended their winning streak to seven games and have won eight straight ACC road games.

Boston College freshman Jayden Hastings made each of his eight field-goal attempts and scored a season-high 18. The Eagles (12-18, 4-15) received 15 points from Elijah Strong and 14 from Dion Brown.

The Eagles trailed 70-67 after Hastings completed a three-point play with 6:22 to go, and they were within three again after two free throws from Luka Toews with 5:43 left. Boston College didn’t score again.

Chad Venning, who is the Eagles’ No. 2 scorer (12.5 ppg) and is tied for second in rebounds (4.1), didn’t play because of a foot injury. The Eagles were also without Roger McFarlane (hip).

A 9-0 run gave the Tigers a 23-11 lead in the opening half. The Tigers stretched the advantage to 41-25 with 4:07 left in the half and were up 49-39 at the break.

Clemson shot 59.4 percent (19 of 32) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, when the Tigers connected on 6 of 10 3-point attempts.

Boston College trailed 62-60 after a Brown 3-pointer capped his personal 7-0 run with 10:51 to play, but Clemson scored the next seven points to extend its lead to nine.

The Tigers outshot the Eagles 50 percent to 41.7 percent overall.

The Eagles played their final home game of the season. They will wrap up their regular season with a game at Pittsburgh on Saturday, the same day Clemson plays host to Virginia Tech.
