Pitt sends out seniors with dominant win over Boston College

boston college, pittsburgh

In a difficult season, Senior Day was a happy one for the Pitt Panthers courtesy of a comfortable 93-67 win over visiting Boston College.

Pitt (17-14, 8-12 ACC) had already qualified for the ACC Tournament, but the victory threw the Panthers into a conglomeration of at least four teams with 8-12 ACC records. Pitt’s exact ACC tournament seeding is uncertain, but they will play in one of Tuesday’s opening round games in Charlotte, N.C.

Led by four Pitt scorers in double figures, Brandin Cummings and Cameron Corhen notched 16 points apiece while Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett chipped in 15 and 14, respectively.

The Panthers never trailed in this one, rolling to an easy 48-19 halftime advantage over the Eagles.

Boston College tied the game at four, but Pitt went on an 11-0 run including six points from Cummings. The Eagles’ ensuing basket, a hook shot from Jayden Hastings, was the last time the Eagles were within a single-digit margin. Boston College shot 28 percent (7-for-25) in the first half with nine turnovers.

Pitt rolled from there, never seeing the lead shrink below 21 points in the second half. The Panthers shot 50 percent (30-for-60) and knocked down 12 of 30 3-point attempts.

The Panthers celebrated Senior Day festivities for Leggett and Zack Austin, along with walk-on Vason Stevenson.

Leggett shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range and added eight boards. Austin had five points and seven rebounds despite foul trouble that arose during a second-half sequence in which he was hit with both a personal and a technical foul. Stevenson added a pair of free throws for his first points in his three-year Pitt career, while Jaland Lowe added 10 assists for a double-double in the win.

Boston College (12-19, 4-16) lost its fourth consecutive game to likely end its season.

Elijah Strong paced the Eagles with 14 points. Donald Hand Jr. added 12 points, while Dion Brown and Chad Venning each scored 10.
