The start of the NFL season, coupled with the growth of online sports betting, led to a record-breaking September in New Jersey as $748.6 million was wagered.
The total tops the previous record of $668 million wagered in August and crushes the total of $445.6 million wagered in September of last year. The state of Indiana also reported a record-setting September with $207.5 million wagered.
Through the first nine months of 2020, New Jersey has collected $3.3 billion in wagers, up from the $2.96 billion wagered over the opening nine months of 2019.
All that action saw the state produce $45.1 million in gross operator revenue, which is up 14.1 percent. The revenue also earned $5.6 million in state taxes.
Online betting accounted for just over 90 percent of the handle in September, while FanDuel Sportsbook/PointsBet leading the way with $25.1 million in gross revenue. That number was $17.6 million in August.
“September’s results hint at a $1 billion month someday soon, which would’ve been impossible to fathom two years ago,” said PlayNJ.com analyst Eric Ramsey, according to SBC Americas. “As we can see with Unibet’s recent launch, online sportsbooks will continue to be where we see growth and where operators will continue to invest.”
Online sports betting through online and app-based entities like DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, BetMGM and others are available only in a select number of states.
