Connor McMichael’s goal with 4:16 remaining broke a tie and Alex Ovechkin moved within nine goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record as the host Washington Capitals beat the Seattle Kraken 4-2 on Sunday.
Defenseman Martin Fehervary and Dylan Strome also scored for the Capitals, who won their fourth straight. Defenseman John Carlson had two assists, McMichael added one assist and Charlie Lindgren stopped 30 shots.
Shane Wright and captain Jordan Eberle supplied the goals for the Kraken. Joey Daccord made 20 saves.
McMichael tipped in Carlson’s slap pass for the go-ahead goal, his 23rd marker of the season. Ovechkin added an empty-net goal with 1:29 left. It was the 886th of his career and 33rd of the season.
It was also Ovechkin’s 1,600th point. He’s the 11th player to reach that milestone.
A scrum to the left of Daccord 6:28 into the third resulted in all 10 skaters on the ice being penalized. Seattle wound up with a power play.
The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Eberle tied it for the Kraken 7:23 into the second period when he put in a cross-slot pass from Chandler Stephenson off the rush.
Washington scored twice in the first three minutes of the second.
Fehervary tied it 1-1 at 35 seconds on a one-time slap shot from the left circle off the rush. Strome celebrated his 500th NHL game by putting Washington ahead 2:51 into the middle period when his screened wrist shot from the high slot area beat Daccord.
Wright put Seattle on the board first 7:23 into the game when he tapped in Andre Burakovsky’s cross-crease pass off a 4-on-2 rush.
Seattle’s Eeli Tolvanen hit the goal post from in front after being alone in front of Lindgren and making a move 7:56 into the first period.
Anthony Beauvillier made his debut with the Capitals after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the NHL trade deadline on Friday.
