Eight players were ejected, and the game was delayed 20 minutes after a brawl broke out during the Kentucky-Florida women’s SEC tournament game Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred after a made basket by Kentucky at the 5:26 mark of the second quarter with the Wildcats leading 22-14.
Kentucky forward Ajae Petty shoved the ball into the face of Florida’s Tatyana Wyche, who then threw the ball — missing — Petty as she ran to the other end of the court. Wyche chased after her and a scrum ensued in front of the Kentucky bench.
Four players from each team were ejected, including Wyche for fighting. Petty was assessed a technical but wasn’t ejected.
The ejections hurt the Gators substantially.
Florida’s Taliyah Wyche (Tatyana’s sister), Ra Shaya Kyle and Faith Dut were all ejected for leaving the bench. Dut and Kyle are starters and played just 13 combined minutes. Kyle was the Gators’ fourth-leading scorer on the season.
Kentucky’s Saniah Tyler, Eniya Russell, Cassidy Rowe and Zennia Thomas were also ejected for leaving the bench. Thomas, Tyler and Rowe played just 31 games combined during the regular season. Russell averaged just 3.4 points per game on the season.
The 14th-seeded Wildcats beat No. 11 seed Florida 72-57 to advance.
