The Utah Hockey Club were 4-for-4 on the power play and defeated the host Dallas Stars 5-3 on Saturday night.
Logan Cooley had a goal and two assists, Barrett Hayton a goal and assist while defenseman Sean Durzi, Josh Doan and Nick Schmaltz also scored for the Utah Hockey Club (37-30-13, 87 points), which has won three of its last four. Jack McBain and Dylan Guenther each had two assists and Karel Vejmelka stopped 21 shots, in his 23rd straight game.
Wyatt Johnston, defenseman Brendan Smith and Jason Robertson got the goals for the Stars (50-24-6, 106 points), who lost their fifth straight (0-3-2). Mikko Rantanen had two assists and Casey DeSmith made 29 saves.
Utah led 4-3 after a five-goal second period.
The Utah Hockey Club scored three consecutive goals after Smith’s short-handed goal 32 seconds into the middle period gave Dallas a 2-1 lead. The one-time slapper from the high slot was Smith’s first goal of the season.
Durzi’s one-time slap shot from above the high slot and off the shaft of the stick of the Stars’ Jamie Benn for a power-play goal tied it 2-2, 1:21 into the second. Cooley scored on a one-time shot from the left circle at 7:04 and Doan put in a loose puck off a goal-mouth scramble with 1:54 left in the second period.
Robertson pulled the Stars to within one 47 seconds later when he tipped in a backdoor pass from defenseman Matt Dumba for Robertson’s 35th goal.
But Schmaltz’s power-play goal 5:32 into the third restored the two-goal lead.
An apparent goal by Dallas captain Jamie Benn, which would have been his 400th, was overturned due to goaltender interference with 41 seconds left.
The game was tied at 1 after the first period.
Johnston’s power-play goal 2:48 into the game gave Dallas a 1-0 lead. It was Johnston’s 32nd goal.
Hayton’s power-play goal tied it 8:11 into the first period. He tipped in a shot by defenseman Mikhail Sergachev from the left point for Hayton’s 20th goal.
