Sun seek to stay undefeated while hosting surging Wings

DeWanna Bonner

The Connecticut Sun look to continue their rousing beginning to the season and remain undefeated when they host the Dallas Wings on Friday in Uncasville, Conn.

The Sun (6-0) have been dominating and square off against Dallas after a 70-47 win at home over Phoenix on Tuesday. After a series of four victories with winning margins of seven, four, one and four points, Connecticut produced its largest win of the season over the short-handed Mercury and is off to its best start in franchise history.

DeWanna Bonner paced the Sun with 19 points in Tuesday’s victory, marking the fifth time in six games she has been the team’s leading scorer. Brionna Jones added 16 points and Alyssa Thomas had 10 as the Sun dominated despite shooting just 35.1 percent from the field, including 5 of 24 (20.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

“We haven’t played our best basketball,” Thomas said. “We’re still working out a lot of kinks, lineups, minute restrictions, so there’s a lot of room for us to continue to grow, which is scary. To start this way speaks volumes to the kind of players we have here.”

The Wings (3-2) travel east across the country after an 84-83 win Sunday in Los Angeles. Dallas has won two straight (on back-to-back nights), with Friday’s contest the fourth in a season-high five-game road trip that ends in Minnesota on Sunday.

Arike Ogunbowale poured in a game-high 20 points in the win over the Sparks as all five starters scored in double figures. Ogunbowale has led Dallas in scoring in all five games this year.

Maddy Siegrist added 15 points for the Wings, and her putback layup with 36 seconds to play was the deciding basket. Monique Billings had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Teaira McCowan racked up 12 points and Sevgi Uzun finished with 11 in the win.

“It was just a team effort. I’m proud of our fight,” Billings said after the win in Los Angeles. “I don’t care about the numbers. We got the W, and that’s all that matters to me.”
