The Houston Texans’ top two running backs were sidelined for practice on Wednesday.
Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) both missed practice as the Texans (2-0) prepare for their Week 3 game at Minnesota (2-0). Mixon is day-to-day with an ankle injury while Pierce continues to recover from a mild hamstring strain. Pierce missed last week’s game.
Mixon was injured in the third quarter of Sunday night’s win over the Chicago Bears after a tackle by Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that Edwards used the now-banned hip-drop tackle on Mixon after seeing video of the play. Edwards was not penalized for the tackle.
Mixon has 184 yards rushing through two games and a touchdown. He also has six catches for 44 yards. While the Texans don’t believe it’s a long-term injury, ESPN reported Mixon might have to sit for a game or more.
Dare Ogunbowale is listed as RB3 for the Texans.
The Texans also placed tight end Brevin Jordan (undisclosed) on injured reserve Wednesday, meaning he’ll miss at least the next four games. Jordan had two catches for seven yards in the first two games (one start) for the Texans.
Dalton Schultz is TE1 and rookie Cade Stover is also on the roster. The team signed TE Irv Smith Jr. to the practice squad on Wednesday.
The Texans also signed cornerback D’Angelo Ross to the active roster from the practice squad. The team inked center Scott Quessenberry to the practice squad to replace him.
The Texans’ top two centers Juice Scruggs and Jarrett Patterson did not suit up for practice Wednesday but were working off to the side. Scruggs missed last week’s game with a groin injury.
