Giants RB Saquon Barkley uncertain about return to practice

Saquon Barkley remains uncertain about his return to the practice field from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Barkley tore the ACL in his left knee in September 2020 and said last month he hopes to be ready for Week 1 of the 2021 season.

But at his youth football camp on Monday, Barkley said he didn’t know when he’d be medically cleared for practice with training camp set to begin next week.

“I don’t know,” Barkley, 24, said, per the New York Post.

“Yeah, I’ve been asked a lot. I guess that’s the theme of the summer, going to be when I’ll be back. But no, I don’t have that answer, to be honest. … It’s a fun process, but it’s a tough process at the same time. Just have to continue to listen to my body, listen to my trainers, listen to the coaches and take it day by day.”

Barkley’s knee had significant swelling and surgery was delayed 40 days, which impacted his recovery timeline as general manager Dave Gettleman pointed out in May.

Saquon Barkley Aiming For Week 1

The real date of focus for the Giants has been Sept. 12, when the team is scheduled to open the season against the Denver Broncos.

The Giants selected Barkley No. 2 overall in the 2018 draft. Offensive Rookie of the Year that year, Barkley has been limited by injuries since. He had 19 carries for 34 yards in 2020 before the season-ending injury.

Gettleman and the Giants exercised Barkley’s fifth-year option for 2022, guaranteeing him $7.217 million.
