Week 2 injuries: Colts QB Carson Wentz rolled ankle ‘pretty bad’

Carson Wentz

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz was unable to finish Sunday’s game with a sprained right ankle and will require further evaluation on Monday.

Indianapolis blew a late lead and lost 27-24 to the Los Angeles Rams.

Wentz was injured when he collapsed awkwardly under the weight of Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

“He rolled it up pretty bad. I kind of had a sense when we walked off the field because I saw that it didn’t look good,” Colts coach Frank Reich said. “The longer we were off the field there it just stiffened up. He tried, but there was no chance.”

Backup Jacob Eason entered the game for Wentz but threw a costly interception that helped the Rams seal the game.

X-Rays Negative For Tua Tagovailoa

Tests are required to determine the exact nature of the rib injury that forced Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to miss most of Miami’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Brian Flores said.

“They are getting tests done on Tua. We don’t know the severity of the injury right now,” Flores said.

Jacoby Brissett stepped in for Tagovailoa, who was blasted by Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa while attempting to complete a pass on fourth down on Miami’s second possession.

Tagovailoa was assisted by trainers, who helped him walk to the sideline and later loaded the second-year quarterback onto a cart and taken to the locker room.

NFL Network reported X-rays were negative and described the injury as bruised ribs.

He completed 1 of 4 passes for 13 yards and was sacked twice before exiting.

Bears’ Andy Dalton Injures Knee

Bears quarterback Andy Dalton has a left knee injury that will require further evaluation. He left the Chicago win the second quarter on Sunday, giving way to rookie first-rounder Justin Fields.

Head coach Matt Nagy said the medical staff ruled out a torn ACL and Dalton was available to re-enter the game in the event of a Fields injury, he added.

Nagy would not commit to a starter for Week 3.

“I’m not going to get into any of that,” Nagy said.

Steelers’ T.J. Watt To Have MRI

Another day is needed before the Steelers understand the severity of linebacker T.J. Watt’s groin injury, head coach Mike Tomlin said.

Pittsburgh awaits further testing on wide receiver Diontae Johnson’s knee injury, as well, after Johnson was injured on the final play of the game. He went to the turf grabbing his knee and will have an MRI, Tomlin said.

As for defensive lineman Tyson Alualu’s ankle fracture, Tomlin said Alualu will miss an “extended period of time.”

Texans QB Tyrod Taylor Injuries Hammy

Houston Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor injured his hamstring on a 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter of Houston’s 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Taylor played the next series, then was replaced by rookie Davis Mills. He will undergo an MRI to uncover the severity of the injury, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Taylor completed 10 of 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Rams’ Justin Lawler Breaks Hand

Rams linebacker Justin Lawler broke his hand during the first half of the Rams’ win over Indianapolis, coach Sean McVay confirmed after the game.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford played through an injured thumb and did not miss any of the game. Lead running back Darrell Henderson left the game in the second half with a rib injury and did not return.
