The 2021 National Invitation Tournament will feature 16 teams and take place in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“The decision to conduct the NIT in one geographic location was made with the interests of having a safe and healthy environment for all participants,” the organizers of the postseason tournament said in a press release Monday. Conference USA and the University of North Texas will serve as hosts for the 83rd edition of the NIT. Games will be played at Comerica Center in Frisco and at UNT Coliseum in Denton.
Traditionally the NIT has featured a 32-team field, culminating with the championship game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The 16 at-large teams and first-round pairings will be announced on March 14. There are no automatic qualifiers this year because of the reduced field size.
First-round games run from March 17-20, followed by the quarterfinals on March 25, semifinals on March 27, and the championship game and third-place game on March 28. All 16 games will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2.
Texas won the NIT title in 2019. The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
