Ohio State’s Fields, Clemson’s Lawrence open as 2020 Heisman favorites

It’s not too early to project a two-man race for the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

DraftKings Sportsbook has posted betting odds, installing two current sophomore quarterbacks as the main contenders. Ohio State’s Justin Fields is at +300, followed by Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence at +400.

How they do on Saturday could sway those odds.

The second-ranked Buckeyes will take on the third-ranked Tigers in a College Football Playoff semifinal on Saturday in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

Fields was third in this year’s Heisman voting behind LSU senior quarterback Joe Burrow and Oklahoma senior signal-caller Jalen Hurts. Lawrence, the 2019 preseason betting favorite, was seventh.

There might be some relatively unfamiliar names behind Fields and Lawrence in the 2020 betting field, but most of those are quarterbacks for top teams — the kind of players who typically win the Heisman.

DraftKings lists redshirting senior quarterback D’Eriq King and current Oklahoma freshman Spencer Rattler at +800. Rattler, the top-rated pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class according to the 247Sports composite, is the heir apparent for the Sooners … unless King is.

King, who decided to redshirt after four games at Houston this season, could be the biggest prize in the transfer market. He accounted for 50 touchdowns in 2018 — 36 passing, 14 rushing.

DraftKings puts Ohio State junior defensive end Chase Young next at +1000. He has not announced his intentions, but he likely will declare for the 2020 NFL Draft and be among the top few picks.

Young is one of two non-quarterbacks among the top nine betting favorites. The other is LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (+1400).

Whoever plays quarterback next season at Alabama figures to be a Heisman candidate. Tua Tagovailoa, rehabbing from a season-ending hip injury, has not closed the door on returning as a senior. If he does, his current odds of +2000 are a good value. His 2019 backup, Mac Jones, is at +1200. A long-shot play can be had on Tagovailoa’s freshman teammate and brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, at +4000.

Auburn quarterback Bo Nix, who started all season as a true freshman, is another at +1200. Burrow’s backup, sophomore Myles Brennan, is +1400 and seems poised to take over LSU’s prolific passing attack, but consider that the Tigers also have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for King.

Further down the list, there might be value in other returning starting quarterbacks, including Texas’ Sam Ehlinger (+2000), North Carolina’s Sam Howell (+2500) and Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez (+2500).

Bets can be hedged on Georgia quarterbacks. Junior starter Jake Fromm, an early-entry candidate, and his backup, Stetson Bennett, are each at +3300.
