Report: Pennsylvania books lost $3.3M on Super Bowl

Retail and online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania suffered a net revenue loss of $3.3 million on bets placed on Super Bowl LIV, according to a report by the state’s Gaming Control Board.

Preliminary numbers show that regulated sportsbooks within the state took in $30.7 million in wagers on the game, while payouts were just more than $34 million, per SBC Americas.

Wagering options for the Super Bowl in Pennsylvania increased from six retail outlets in 2019 to 12 retail and eight online sites this year.

The Board’s report showed a handle of $6,728,544 for retail and $24,035,942 for online, amounting to a total handle of $30,693,942, per SBA. The retail loss was $450,894 while the online loss was $2,840,675, for a total of $3,334,787.

According to the report, close to 200,000 people placed an online bet for Super Bowl LIV in Pennsylvania, approximately double what the state’s numbers show for Sundays during the rest of the NFL’s season.

The Kansas City Chiefs rallied from a 20-10 fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in the game.
