Sam Querrey flees Russia after positive COVID-19 test

Sam Querrey

Sam Querrey elected to leave Russia on a private plane after testing positive for COVID-19, organizers of the St. Petersburg Open said Thursday.

Per the tournament, Querrey and his wife, Abby, tested positive on Sunday. He had withdrawn from the tourney, and his family was asked to isolate together at the St. Petersburg Four Seasons for 14 days.

The tournament said in a statement that Querrey did not open the door to doctors on Monday, claiming that his 8-month-old son, Ford, was sleeping. Ford also reportedly tested positive. The family then left the hotel prior to a second scheduled examination the next day.

According to The New York Times, Querrey received a call from Russian health authorities informing him that he and his family would be hospitalized if they were displaying any symptoms. Rather than risk being separated from each other and their infant, Querrey arranged for the private jet to take them to a “nearby European country” that didn’t require negative tests to enter, per the report.

The ATP Tour said it was investigating an incident at the tournament, but the governing body did not mention Querrey by name.

“The ATP is aware of an incident regarding a player’s serious breach of protocol relating to COVID-19 at this week’s St. Petersburg Open,” the Tour said in a statement. “Adhering to health and safety protocols is critical to ensure events take place safely and within the guidelines established by local authorities. Players and their support team members are reminded that breaches of protocol can jeopardize an event’s ability to operate and have repercussions on the rest of the Tour. In accordance with ATP’s Code of Conduct, we are taking this matter extremely seriously and an investigation is underway.”

Querrey is ranked 49th in the world.
