Serena sizzles in U.S. Open quarterfinal rout

Serena Williams owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, but she produced one of her more overwhelming victories Tuesday in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

The eighth-seeded American routed 18th-seeded Qiang Wang of China 6-1, 6-0 in 44 minutes in New York.

Williams hit 25 winners to Wang’s zero. Williams had 10 unforced errors, Wang 13.

The six-time U.S. Open champion never faced a break point, and she converted all five of her break opportunities. She won 50 of the match’s 65 points.

The score line was even better than Williams’ first-round destruction of Russia’s Maria Sharapova, a 6-1, 6-1 blowout.

Next up for Williams is a semifinal matchup with fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian continued her dominance of 16th-seeded Johanna Konta of Great Britain, winning 6-4, 6-4.

Svitolina, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, improved to 5-0 in her career against Konta and reached her second straight Grand Slam semifinal, after losing in the first four major quarterfinal appearances of her career.

“I had some tough matches (in the) Round of 16, quarterfinals before I started to win them,” said Svitolina, who also became the first Ukrainian woman to reach the U.S. Open semifinals. “It’s been tough and painful losses sometimes, but I think they gave me this push, this confidence and maybe helped me in some matches.”

Both sets followed the same path, with Svitolina breaking Konta’s serve to lead 3-2, Konta breaking right back to level it at 3-3 and Svitolina breaking again for a 4-3 advantage. Svitolina saved one break point at 4-3 in the first set before serving out. In the second, Konta survived two match points to hold at 5-4 before Svitolina served for the match.

“Mentally I’m handling the pressure points better,” Svitolina said of her steadiness.

The fifth-ranked player in the world, Svitolina finished with 16 winners and 13 unforced errors, compared to 24 and 35, respectively, for Konta. The loss kept Konta from becoming the first British woman to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slams in the Open Era.

Svitolina beat Serena Williams’ sister, Venus Williams, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round last week.

“Definitely it’s a big challenge to play against her,” Svitolina said of facing Serena Williams.

The other two women’s quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday, with 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland opposing 23rd-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia, and 15th-seeded Bianca Andreescu of Canada facing 25th-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium.
