Serena wins first title since 2017

Serena Williams picked up her first title in three years — and her first since returning from maternity leave — by beating compatriot Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday.

The 38-year-old American converted three of 15 break chances in picking up her 73rd career WTA singles title.

Williams announced afterward she would donate the prize money to the Australian bushfire relief fund.

After the match, Williams and doubles partner Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark lost to Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles final.

Muhammad has yet to lose in five doubles finals. It was just the second loss in a doubles final for Williams, and her first since 1999.

Brisbane Open

No. 2 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic repeated as champ with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over No. 8 seed Madison Keys in the final in Brisbane, Australia.

It was the third Brisbane title and 16th WTA singles title for Pliskova, who was facing Keys for the first time.

Down 3-2 in the second set, Keys rallied to win five straight games and force the deciding set.

Pliskova eventually broke open the tight third set, sealing the match on her second chance at serving out.
