Revolution MF Carles Gil named MLS MVP

New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil was named the 2021 Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player on Tuesday.

The Revolution captain led the league with 18 assists and spearheaded New England to its first Supporters’ Shield with an MLS single-season record 73 points (22-5-7).

Gil added four goals in 28 games (24 starts) and eight of his helpers were game-winning assists, tying a league record.

“It is an honor for me to be named the MLS Most Valuable Player,” Gil said in a team news release. “I want to thank everyone who voted for me, everyone who works at the club, our coaching staff, our fans, and especially my teammates. Together, we achieved an unforgettable regular season.”

Burgeoning Trophy Case

The 29-year-old Spaniard was previously awarded the 2021 MLS Comeback Player of the Year award and made his second appearance on the MLS Best XI (also 2019). He was the league’s Newcomer of the Year in 2019.

Gil is the second Revolution player to take home the award, joining 2005 winner Taylor Twellman.

Gil received 52.1 percent of the ballots cast by current players, club technical staff and media members. Nashville SC midfielder Hany Mukhtar was the runner-up with 11.8 percent.
