Tiger rallies to open with 69 at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods shot a 3-under-par 69 on the North Course at Torrey Pines in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday in his first competitive round of 2020.

Teeing off on the back nine, Woods bogeyed his second hole of the day and made his turn at even par 36. He then birdied the first hole and rolled in two more birdie putts to carded a 3-under 33 on his back nine.

“Overall, I’m pleased to shoot something in the 60s today,” Woods told the Golf Channel. “The golf course was definitely getable today.”

The North Course is considered the easier of the two at Torrey Pines, with Woods playing the tougher South Course in Friday’s second round.

Woods, a seven-time winner of the event to go along with his 2008 U.S. Open victory at Torrey Pines, is also seeking to win a record 83rd career PGA Tour title. He currently shares the record with Sam Snead.

Woods hasn’t played a full-field stroke play event since winning the ZOZO Championship in October. He played in his Hero World Challenge and the Presidents Cup in December, then didn’t touch a club until playing with his son on his 44th birthday on Dec. 30.

“I definitely was feeling (the adrenaline of competing again),” Woods told the Golf Channel. “I missed the competition and the competing, and I was trying to keep everything as calm as I possibly could. I didn’t do a very good job of that starting out. I felt like I fought back, and a lot of positives heading into the South course.
