Wondolowski scores four, breaks Donovan's MLS goals record

San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski broke his goal-less start to the season with four on Saturday, setting the Major League Soccer career record for regular-season goals.
He tied the mark of the retired Landon Donovan with his 145th career tally in the 21st minute, and then broke it in the 48th minute to give the Earthquakes a 2-0 lead against the Chicago Fire at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
On the record breaker, Cristian Espinoza sent a free kick into the box. Fire goalkeeper David Ousted had the cross slip out of hands on the rainy afternoon, and Wondolowski was there to poke the ball in with his left foot from 4 yards out.
Later in the second half, he struck twice in a short span, knocking home a loose ball in the 74th minute, and then slotting a great pass from Jackson Yueill into a gaping net on the back post in the 76th minute, giving him 148 in his career.
On Wondolowski’s first goal, he had used his outstretched right leg to nudge a pass from Shea Salinas past Ousted.
Saturday marked Wondolowski’s first start since March 30 against Los Angeles FC, and he had yet to score in 10 appearances (four starts) this season.
The 36-year-old Wondolowski needed 338 matches to surpass the mark Donovan accomplished in 340 games. Donovan played from 2001-04 for San Jose before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
