Yankees near trade for Rangers slugger Joey Gallo

joey gallo

The New York Yankees, battling for a playoff spot in the American League, acquired outfielder Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, multiple media outlets reported.

The Yankees will also get left-handed pitcher John King in the deal, while Texas is set to welcome six of New York’s prospects: outfielder Everson Pereira, infielder Ezequiel Duran, second baseman/outfielder Trevor Hauver, shortstop Josh Smith and right-handed pitchers Randy Vasquez and Glenn Otto, according to reports.

Yankees add needed thump
Gallo, 27, is a two-time All-Star who has 25 home runs and 55 RBIs this year while batting .223 and slugging .490. The right fielder has also drawn a major-league-leading 74 walks.

During June and early July, Gallo hit 11 homers in a stretch of 12 games. He later participated in the Home Run Derby during Major League Baseball’s All-Star break.

He adds a lethal bat to the Yankees’ lineup as they fight with the American League East-leading Boston Red Sox and the second-place Tampa Bay Rays for playoff position.

In 568 games over seven seasons, all with Texas, Gallo has 145 home runs and 317 RBIs while batting .211.

King, 26, has appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen for Texas the past two years. This season, he owns a 7-5 record and 3.52 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 12 walks in 46 innings.

Per MLB.com’s rankings, the highest-rated prospect the Yankees gave up was Smith, a 23-year-old whom they selected in the second round of the 2019 draft. Smith, the 14th-rated prospect in the New York system, hit .324 with nine homers and 24 RBIs in a combined 39 games for two Class-A teams this year.
