The New York Yankees activated catcher Gary Sanchez from the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
He has been out since July 24 with a left groin strain. He was 1-for-5 in two games on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Backup catcher Kyle Higashioka was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Friday’s game.
“He should be fairly good to go,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday night of Sanchez’s return. “I don’t know if I’d catch him Saturday and Sunday, especially with the doubleheader Monday. So I’ll probably split those first few days up, but I’m not looking at it as easing him back in.”
Sanchez is starting behind the plate for Saturday’s game.
Sanchez, 26, is batting .229 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs in 77 games. After a strong start, he batted .118 with one homer in 21 games from June 23 to July 23.
The Yankees also placed right-hander Jonathan Holder on the 10-day injured list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder and called up left-hander Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A.
