Boone, Yankees expect Stanton to return for homestand

Giancarlo Stanton could return to the New York Yankees for the start of their upcoming homestand, manager Aaron Boone said Thursday.

Stanton last played in a game June 25. He is on the 60-day IL with a strained PCL in his right knee. The four-time All-Star also missed time earlier in the season.

Boone said the current plan is for Stanton to play in instructional league games this weekend. Barring a setback, he will be in New York next week when the Yankees open a series with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

What role Stanton might play over the final two weeks of the regular season isn’t clear, but the Yankees have already claimed the American League East division and will be playing into October.

In nine games and 35 total plate appearances in 2019, Stanton is 9-for-31 with one homer and seven RBIs.

Stanton is a .268 career hitter with 306 homers and 779 RBIs over 10 seasons with the Yankees (2018-19) and Florida/Miami Marlins (2010-17).

He was the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 2017, when he led the majors with 59 home runs and 132 RBIs.
