Zheng Saisai avenged her loss to Peng Shuai in the Zhengzhou Women's Tennis Open semifinals last year by beating the No. 2 seed in the opening round of this year's event in Zhengzhou, China on Monday.

Zheng won 7-6 (8), 6-2 in the two-hour all-Chinese showdown. She came back from two games down in each set, including winning her last six games in the second set, to defeat Peng for the first time in five tries.

Thailand's Luksika Kumkhum, the event's No. 3 seed, was also ousted early, as American Danielle Lao won 7-6 (0), 7-6 (10). Lao denied Kumkhum on nine set points to earn the upset win.

Three of the event's other seeded players had a much easier time: No. 4 Wang Yafan of China bested Japan's Junri Namigata 6-3, 6-1; No. 6 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium battled past Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-4 and No. 8 Zhu Lin of China cruised past fellow countrywoman Gao Xinyu 6-2, 6-2.

Japan's Mai Minokoshi, China's Wang Xiyu and South Korea's Jang Su-Jeong were also winners in unseeded action.

No. 1 seed Zhang Shuai of China will be in action Tuesday.
