Former Texas starting quarterback Shane Buechele has informed the team that he’s exploring leaving the program as a graduate transfer, with the school confirming to ESPN that he’s in the transfer portal. Texas also confirmed to ESPN that redshirt freshman Cameron Rising is transferring — most likely to Utah. Buechele started 19 games for Texas before losing his job to Sam Ehlinger. Buechele has two years of eligibility remaining after he graduates from Texas in May. ESPN reports that Buechele could end up at SMU after the Mustangs lost all-time leading passer Ben Hicks, who transferred to Arkansas. Buechele started every game for Texas in 2016, becoming the first true freshman in school history to start at least the first two games of his career. He threw for 2,958 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. But Buechele was beset with injuries early in the 2017 season, opening the door for Ehlinger. Texas will enter the 2019 season with three scholarship quarterbacks. Freshman Casey Thompson, who ESPN reported has informed the school he intends to stay, and true freshman Roschon Johnson will back up Ehlinger.
