Longtime OF Jon Jay announces retirement

Outfielder Jon Jay, who played 12 seasons with seven major league teams, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Jay, 37, hasn’t been with a team since the Los Angeles Angels released him in July. He batted .283 with 37 homers, 341 RBIs and 55 stolen bases in 1,201 games from 2010-2021.

Jay played his first six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and was a member of the club’s 2011 World Series title team. He also played for the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and Angels.

“As a kid I remember watching SportsCenter highlights and imitating my favorite MLB players,” Jay said in his post on Instagram. “It is still surreal to me that I played Major league Baseball. As I officially retire from the game that changed my life, I want to thank everyone who has played a role in getting me here.”
