Sharks nip Rangers in OT for season-best 3rd straight win

Tomas Hertl scored at 1:29 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks rallied from a two-goal, third-period deficit to defeat the visiting New York Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

A wide-open Hertl took a crossing pass from Jan Rutta at the bottom of the right circle and then fired a wrist shot over a diving Igor Shesterkin for the game-winner. It was Hertl’s 15th goal of the season.

Nico Sturm and Ryan Carpenter also scored goals and Rutta had two assists for San Jose, which extended its winning streak to a season-best three games. It marked the first time since March 28-April 1 last season that the Sharks won three games in a row.

San Jose goalie Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 29 saves.

Adam Fox had a goal and an assist and Artemi Panarin also scored for New York, which finished 1-2-1 on its western road trip while losing for the seventh time in the past 10 games (3-5-2).

Shesterkin made 19 saves for the Rangers, who extended their point streak against the Sharks to 11 games (9-0-2) dating back to the 2017-18 season.

New York took a 1-0 lead at the 7:55 mark of the first period when Fox tapped in a rebound of a Alexis Lafreniere shot during a goalmouth scramble for his eighth of the season.

The Rangers extended the lead to 2-0 at 1:38 of the second period. Panarin snapped in a wrist shot from the top of the right circle past a Vincent Trocheck screen for his 29th goal.

San Jose then tied it early in the third period with two goals in the span of 2:08.

Sturm got the first one when he intercepted Erik Gustafsson’s clearing pass from behind the net and banked in a shot off the back of Shesterkin’s right skate at 2:19 for his third goal.

Carpenter followed with a deflection of Rutta’s shot from the right point, with the puck going past Shesterkin’s blocker side.
