Baylor Scheierman recorded 26 points and 16 rebounds as No. 12 Creighton rolled to an 89-75 victory over No. 5 Marquette on Saturday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
Scheierman made 8 of 17 shots overall, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range, as the Bluejays (22-8, 13-6 Big East) won for the sixth time in seven games. Ryan Kalkbrenner notched 19 points, while Trey Alexander added 18 to go along with 11 assists.
Kam Jones paced the short-handed Golden Eagles (22-7, 13-5) with 23 points. Marquette played without reigning Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kolek (oblique) and Oso Ighodaro (illness).
David Joplin matched a season high with 21 points and Stevie Mitchell set a season high with 15 for the Golden Eagles, who were outshot 54.1 percent to 46.9 percent overall.
Creighton opened up a 60-50 advantage following a Scheierman layup with 12:52 to go in the second half.
Zaide Lowery drilled a trey to ignite a 9-1 Marquette run, allowing the Golden Eagles to creep within 61-59 with 9:32 left.
Marquette had its deficit down to one, 63-62, with 8:58 remaining when Jones connected from beyond the arc, but the Golden Eagles could never pull in front.
Scheierman virtually sealed the victory when he hit two threes in a span of 39 seconds, making it 81-69 with 2:17 to play.
Jones got off to a torrid start, scoring nine points on 4-of-4 shooting to lift Marquette to a 16-15 lead with 13:04 left in the first half.
After Alexander canned a 3-pointer, the Golden Eagles’ Ben Gold threw a pass into the backcourt, where Alexander tracked the ball down and sank another triple in transition to put Creighton up 28-21.
That forced a Marquette timeout, marking the first stoppage of play in just under 5 1/2 minutes.
Mitchell later converted a layup to pull the Golden Eagles within two, 33-31, with 5:52 remaining, but the Bluejays answered with a 6-0 spurt.
However, Marquette scored nine of the final 12 points of the first half, getting a last-second layup from Gold to go into the break trailing 42-40.
