Alexander Zverev to face Nicolas Jarry in Rome final

No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will meet No. 21 seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia after both players won challenging three-set semifinals on Friday in Rome.

Zverev turned things around after a slow start to defeat Chilean No. 29 seed Alejandro Tabilo 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Jarry outlasted 14th-seeded Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3.

After Tabilo coasted to victory in the first set, Zverev went game for game with him in the second set until the tiebreaker. There, Tabilo went out to a 2-0 lead before Zverev took over.

“I was just hanging on in the second set. I brought my energy up. I was really just hanging on and waiting and the patience was kind of good today,” Zverev said. “He hit me off the court in the first set and I did not play well at all, but he was a big reason why. He gave me no rhythm and I am happy I turned it around in the tiebreak and ran away in the third set.”

Zverev finished with a 10-7 edge in aces and had five fewer unforced errors than Tabilo (12 vs. 17). This marks his first time advancing to an ATP Masters 1000 final since injuring his ankle at the 2022 French Open.

“All in all, I am happy in the final,” Zverev said. “At the end, winning is the most important.”

Meanwhile, Jarry continued his memorable run at Foro Italico by reaching the first ATP Masters 1000 final of his career. He had not made it as far as the semifinals at a Masters event before this week.

Jarry finished with a 13-7 edge in aces against Paul, saved 5 of 6 break points and had 35 total winners to Paul’s 19.

The players held serve to start the third set until Jarry broke Paul in the sixth game, giving him the edge he needed to finish.

“It’s in those moments that I play my best tennis,” Jarry said. “That’s when I (go) for it and if it goes in, amazing, if it doesn’t then you give it up. I try to be like that throughout the whole match.”

Paul, playing on his 27th birthday, was unable to reach his first Masters 1000 final in three attempts. He also made the semifinals at Toronto last year and Indian Wells earlier this year.
