Sean Brady outlasts Gilbert Burns at UFC Fight Night

sean brady

Sean Brady defeated Gilbert Burns by unanimous decision on Saturday night in their main event welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.

Burns (22-8-0) entered the fight as the betting underdog and was overwhelmed by Brady (17-1-0), who took the cards 50-45, 50-45, 49-46.

The win was Brady’s second in a row. Burns has dropped his past three fights.

In Round 1, Burns and Brady traded punches in the center of the octagon. Round 2 saw more of the same, but Brady made more of an effort to land his first takedown. Burns quickly defended it and returned to the center, but Brady’s boxing began to pick up.

Burns continued to hang in Brady’s boxing range as both men briefly exchanged takedown attempts. With under a minute left, Brady landed a combination, but it didn’t stun Burns or put him off-balance.

A head kick opened the striking from Burns in Round 3, but it didn’t hurt Brady, who stayed stagnant. Brady went back to the clinch to try and tire out Burns, but Burns was able to reverse the position and land a knee before both men went back to the center of the octagon.

A right hand from Burns forced another clinch, dragging Brady against the cage. Brady reversed position, throwing smaller-type body punches before both men separated again. Burns fired off a few knees before both men went for takedowns, with Brady landing his.

A low blow from Brady to Burns’ protective cup briefly halted the action to begin the fourth round, and Burns committed the same act just seconds later. Burns and Brady continued to clinch for much of the round before Brady secured a late takedown.

Burns swept Brady from underneath before both men stood back up. Burns had Brady’s back briefly but couldn’t find the submission, taking the fight to Round 5.

With less than two minutes left in the fight, Burns ended up on the bottom of another Brady takedown before both men stood up. Brady then took Burns down again, sealing the decision and remaining on top of Burns until the horn sounded.

In women’s flyweight action, Jessica Andrade (26-13-0) and fellow Brazilian Natalia Silva (18-5-1) had a 15-minute stand-up slugfest. Despite neither woman securing a finish, Silva overwhelmed Andrade with volume, forward movement and unorthodox striking to secure a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 win by unanimous decision.

Steve Garcia (17-5-0) knocked out Kyle Nelson (16-6-1) in a featherweight fight, while Cody Durden got the best of Matt Schnell (16-9-0) via submission in a bantamweight battle.
