Rasmus Andersson’s shootout goal lifts Flames over Wild

Martin Pospisil

Rasmus Andersson scored the shootout winning goal in the fifth round and the Calgary Flames completed a perfect four-game homestand with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Kevin Rooney, Martin Pospisil and Yegor Sharangovich scored regulation-time goals for the Flames, who surrendered a two-goal, third-period lead but recovered. Goaltender Dan Vladar made 20 saves before overtime and then denied four of five Wild he faced in the shootout.

Marco Rossi scored once in a two-point game, while Marcus Johansson and Brock Faber added goals for the Wild, who were without top scorer Kirill Kaprizov due to a knee injury sustained in the previous game. Matt Boldy collected two assists, which gives him three goals and four assists in a six-point point streak.

Goalie Filip Gustavsson stopped 28 shots for the Wild, who have only one regulation-time road loss this season (9-1-3).

Andersson notched his second career shootout winner with a low five-hole shot to complete an entertaining affair in which Calgary had a couple of leads and the Wild showed plenty of grit.

Despite the Wild dominating play in the early going, Rooney opened the scoring by deflecting Daniil Miromanov’s point shot at the 15-minute mark for his second goal of the season.

Johansson tied the clash 63 seconds later when he converted the pass from Boldy during a two-on-one rush for his third goal of the campaign.

Pospisil, with his first goal since the season opener, put the Flames ahead a second time with 30.3 seconds remaining in the second period. The pesky winger deflected a shot-pass on the power play to snap a 19-game goal drought.

Sharangovich doubled the lead with another man-advantage marker at 3:53 of the third period. Off a face-off win, Sharangovich set up shop in the high slot and unloaded a one-timer for his fourth goal of the season.

However, Faber made it a one-goal game with a power-play goal of his own with 3:59 remaining. The defenseman threaded the needle from the point with a shot off the post and in for his third of the season.

With their goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Rossi tied the clash with 34 seconds on the clock by tucking home an open chance at the doorstep for his sixth goal of the campaign.
