Roman Josi’s two goals help Predators get past Jets

Jonathan Marchessault had a goal and an assist for the Nashville Predators in their 4-1 win against the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Saturday evening.

Marchessault, who left the Vegas Golden Knights in the offseason and signed to five-year, $27.5 million free-agent contract with Nashville, scored his fourth goal of the season and first in six games.

Roman Josi scored twice, Steven Stamkos also scored and Juuse Saros made 23 saves for the Predators, who had lost four of five (1-2-2).

Adam Lowry scored and Eric Comrie made 32 saves in his fifth start of the season for the Jets, who have lost three of five following their 15-1-0 start.

The Predators took a 1-0 lead at 9:55 of the first period.

Marchessault passed the puck back to Josi at the left point, and he sent a slap shot through heavy traffic and into the net.

Alexandre Carrier appeared to give Nashville a 2-0 lead with a wrist shot 16 seconds later, but Winnipeg challenged for offsides and the goal was disallowed.

Lowry tied it 1-1 with 10:02 left in the second period during a delayed penalty.

A shot from the right point was blocked by Predators defenseman Luke Schenn. Mason Appleton retrieved the rebound and took a spinning shot that ended up in the crease, and Lowry pushed the puck across the goal line before Saros could cover it.

The Predators went on their third power play of the game and Stamkos scored off a rebound for a 2-1 lead at 3:20 of the third.

Marchessault extended the lead to 3-1 at 5:04 when he scored a rebound from the slot.

Josi scored into an empty net with 1:20 left.

Nashville, which came in with the top penalty kill unit in the NHL at 91.3 percent, killed all three penalties by the Jets, who came in with the most efficient power play unit (35.6).

Jets defenseman Dylan Samberg sustained a lower-body injury when he blocked a shot by Stamkos early in the second period, and Winnipeg had to play with five defensemen the rest of the way.
