Three quick goals help Islanders edge Blackhawks

islanders

Noah Dobson, Bo Horvat and Maxim Tsyplakov scored within a span of 2:19 for the New York Islanders, who held off a late rally by the Chicago Blackhawks to earn a 5-4 win on Thursday in Elmont, N.Y.

Dennis Cholowski and Simon Holmstrom scored in the second period for the Islanders, who have won three of four. New York goalie Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves. Holmstrom and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (three assists) each logged a three-point game, and Dobson finished with two points.

Connor Bedard scored in the first period and TJ Brodie tallied in the third before Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice in the final 1:10 third for the Blackhawks, who have lost six of seven. Bedard and Alex Vlasic each registered two assists.

Chicago goalie Arvid Soderblom stopped just 14 of 19 shots before being pulled for Drew Commesso, who saved both shots he faced in his NHL debut.

A cross-checking penalty on Cholowski generated the power play that led to Bedard’s goal with 3:13 left in the first. Islanders center Kyle Palmieri almost picked off Vlasic’s cross-ice pass along the blue line before Ryan Donato collected the puck and dished to Bedard, who skated around New York defensemen Ryan Pulock and Alexander Romanov before firing a shot beyond Sorokin’s glove.

Cholowski redeemed himself 6:59 into the second. He took a pass from Holmstrom in the high slot and beat Soderblom glove side moments after a power play expired.

Holmstrom put the Islanders ahead for good with 5:54 remaining. The right winger took a pass from Pulock along the boards, screeched to a halt to shake Blackhawks defenseman Kevin Korchinski and skated into the slot before sending a shot past Soderblom, who was screened by Brodie as well as Pageau.

Dobson started the third-period flurry at 5:39. After taking a backhanded pass from Brock Nelson in the neutral zone, Dobson skated into the left faceoff circle, faked a pass to Pierre Engvall and fired a shot beyond Soderblom’s glove.

Horvat scored 57 seconds later to cap a nifty sequence in which Holmstrom took a drop pass from Pageau and dished to Horvat, who was stationed just above the crease and shoveled a shot over Soderblom’s stick.

Tsyplakov put home the rebound of a shot by Palmieri at 7:58.

Brodie scored his first goal of the season at 11:04, when his shot went under Sorokin’s glove as Dobson and Nick Foligno battled for position next to him. Bertuzzi scored with 1:10 remaining and again with 9.7 seconds left.
