The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson, his agents at SportsTrust Advisors announced on social media on Tuesday.
The Steelers have three quarterbacks who are eligible to become free agents in March: starter Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Kyle Allen.
Thompson, 27, played in three games for the Miami Dolphins last season, losing his lone start 24-3 at the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. For the season, Thompson completed 21 of 33 passes (63.6 percent) for 187 yards.
He spent part of the 2024 season on the practice squad and became a free agent on Monday when his contract expired.
Thompson appeared in seven regular-season games (two starts) in 2022 and was 60 of 105 (57.1 percent) for one touchdown and three interceptions. He started Miami’s AFC wild-card playoff game against the host Buffalo Bills on Jan. 15, 2023, completing 18 of 45 passes for 220 yards, one TD and two picks in a 34-31 defeat.
The Dolphins selected Thompson in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Kansas State.
Released by the Broncos at the end of the 2023 season, Wilson signed a team-friendly, one-year deal with the Steelers. He informed the Steelers he wants to return, but said Monday that he understands Pittsburgh must follow “a process” to determine what’s next at a position unsettled since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season.
“That’s the plan,” Wilson, 36, said when asked if he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh. “I love it here and everything else. I think we have a great football team. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and I think there’s a lot more to do.”
Fields, 25, was acquired from the Chicago Bears and started the first six games of the regular season, leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record while Wilson recovered from a calf injury.
The Steelers went 10-7 in the regular season and lost to the host Baltimore Ravens 28-14 on Saturday in the AFC wild-card playoffs.
