Sidney Crosby’s OT tally takes Penguins past Utah

Utah Hockey Club, Penguins

Sidney Crosby scored in overtime to cap a two-point game as the Pittsburgh Penguins earned a 3-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Wednesday in Salt Lake City.

Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson also scored for the Penguins, who erased a pair of deficits and snapped a three-game losing streak. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves.

Pittsburgh finished 3-4-0 on a seven-game road trip.

Crosby came off the bench, received a pass from Cody Glass at the left faceoff circle, cut across the crease and lifted a backhand shot at 3:54 of the extra period.

It was Crosby’s 23rd career overtime winner, which ranks second in NHL history behind Alex Ovechkin’s 27. Crosby has notched three goals in the past three games.

Mikhail Sergachev and Michael Carcone scored for Utah, which took its third loss in a row (0-2-1). Goalie Connor Ingram made 25 saves.

Utah fell to 8-11-5 at home due to its inability to hold leads.

Sergachev, who returned to action after missing five games due to an upper-body injury, opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 14:51 of the first period. Sergachev was fed a pass at the high slot and fired a top-corner shot.

Pettersson pulled the Penguins even at 6:40 of the second period, unloading a point shot that ricocheted off the stick of a defender and into the cage.

Carcone restored Utah’s lead two minutes later. He was denied on a breakaway but had the presence to chip the rebound chance up and over the goalie.

Again the Penguins tied the game, when Karlsson took advantage of a giveaway, skated deep in the zone and found the mark at 6:17 of the third period.
