No. 10 Purdue slides past Indiana for 9th win in 10 games

Trey Kaufman-Renn sank the go-ahead hook shot with 11.9 seconds as part of a 23-point effort to help No. 10 Purdue post an 81-76 victory over visiting Indiana in Big Ten play on Friday night at West Lafayette, Ind.

Braden Smith recorded 24 points, seven assists and a season-high six steals as Purdue (17-5, 9-2 Big Ten) won for the ninth time in its last 10 games.

Fletcher Loyer had 15 points and Kaufman-Renn made 10 of 13 from the field as the Boilermakers defeated the Hoosiers for the 16th time in the past 20 meetings.

Mackenzie Mgbako scored 25 points for Indiana (14-8, 5-6), which lost for the fifth time in the past six games. Trey Galloway had 15 points, Oumar Ballo added 14 points and eight rebounds and Luke Goode tallied 13 points for the Hoosiers.

After Kaufman-Renn gave the Boilermakers a 77-76 edge, Indiana’s Myles Rice had his shot blocked by Gicarri Harris with under 4 seconds remaining. Loyer caught the carom and was fouled and made two free throws with 3.3 seconds left.

The Hoosiers then tried a full-court pass and Kaufman-Renn intercepted it. He was fouled and made two clinching free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining.

Purdue shot 52.7 percent from the field but was just 2 of 13 from 3-point range.

The Hoosiers made 56.6 percent of their shots and hit 7 of 19 from behind the arc. Indiana (20) committed twice as many turnovers as Purdue (10).

Smith made two free throws with 1:51 left to give Purdue a 74-72 lead. C.J. Cox split two free throws 14 seconds later to give the Boilermakers a three-point edge.

Galloway scored a basket with 1:22 to play and added a short floater with 30.5 seconds left to give Indiana a 76-75 lead.

Goode scored 13 first-half points and Mgbako added 11 as Indiana led 41-37 at the break. Smith had 14 points in the half for the Boilermakers.

Purdue led 56-49 after a basket by Kaufman-Renn with 13:53 left in the game before the Hoosiers went on a 14-2 burst.

A 3-pointer by Mgbako tied the score at 58 with 10:35 remaining. Mgbako followed with two layups in 27 seconds and Ballo split two free throws to give Indiana a 63-58 lead with 7:36 left.
