Vanderbilt forces overtime, upends No. 14 Missouri

Missouri, Vanderbilt

Chris Manon amassed 23 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Edwards added 17 points — 15 after halftime — as Vanderbilt came from behind to beat No. 14 Missouri 97-93 on Saturday in a key Southeastern Conference clash in Nashville.

The Tigers led by nine at halftime but Vanderbilt (20-9, 8-8 SEC) refused to give in, rallying to tie the game and then going ahead 71-69 when Jaylen Corey hit a layup with 3:56 to play.

Missouri rebuilt its advantage to 77-71 as the game went back and forth. Anthony Robinson II hit with two free throws to build the Tigers’ lead back to four before Edwards poured in a 3-pointer with 12.2 seconds to play.

Missouri’s Caleb Grill hit two free throws with nine seconds left that were countered when Tyler Nickel rained in a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to send the game into the extra period.

The Commodores never trailed in overtime, opening with a layup by Manon and eventually stoking their advantage to seven when Edwards drilled a 3-pointer with 1:09 left. Missouri clawed to within three but Devin McGlockton converted a free throw with eight seconds remaining and Vanderbilt held on to win.

A.J. Hoggard added 21 points and Nickel had 12 for Vanderbilt, which has won three straight games, all against ranked teams.

Missouri reserve Caleb Grill led all scorers with 28 points while Mark Mitchell added 20 and Tamar Bates and Robinson hit for 16 each. The Tigers (21-8, 10-6) have dropped two of their past three.

Three free throws by Manon with 5:10 remaining in the first half put the Commodores ahead 25-24. But Missouri finished the half with a 14-4 surge, scoring the final seven points culminated by a pair of free throws by Mitchell to carry a 38-29 advantage to the break.

Grill hit for 16 points before halftime to lead all scorers while Bates added 10 for Missouri. Manon racked up 14 to pace the Commodores.

Vanderbilt used a layup by Manon and a jumper from Edwards in the first minute of the second half to draw within 38-33. The hosts culled their deficit to as few as three on five occasions over the ensuing six minutes, the latter coming when McGlockton scored on a layup with 12:09 to play.
