Austin Riley and Matt Olson hit back-to-back home runs off Marcus Stroman and the host Atlanta Braves blasted the New York Yankees 11-1 in spring-training action on Sunday in North Port, Fla.
Riley later had an RBI double off Stroman (1-1), who was making his second start of the spring since declaring he would not come out of the Yankees’ bullpen this season. Stroman gave up four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The Braves continued their 12-hit assault on the Yankees’ relievers, with Jarred Kelenic and Charles Leblanc (three-run HR) going deep in the seventh and David McCabe adding a two-run single in the ninth. Starter Reynaldo Lopez (1-0) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a hit and two walks.
Everson Pereira had two of the Yankees’ seven hits. The lone run came across on Pablo Reyes’ sacrifice fly.
Phillies 5, Orioles 4
Matt Kroon hit the walk-off, two-run single to left and Philadelphia’s split squad defeated visiting Baltimore in Clearwater, Fla.
Kroon’s hit scored Payton Henry and Bryan Rincon, who walked and singled before Paul McIntosh was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alec Bohm went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo homers for the Phillies.
The Orioles went ahead 4-3 with a two-inning seventh that featured an RBI single by Livan Soto. Christian Herberholz (0-1) blew the save, making a winner out of Philadelphia’s Nabil Crismatt (1-0).
Blue Jays 5, Phillies 4
Daulton Varsho, Bo Bichette and Steward Berroa each hit solo shots as Toronto got by visiting Philadelphia in Dunedin, Fla.
Max Scherzer made a 3 2/3-inning start and struck out four with one run on one hit. The Blue Jays later went ahead for good with a two-run seventh, thanks to a wild pitch and bases-loaded walk issued by the Phillies’ Griff McGarry (0-1). Toronto reliever Alex Amalfi (1-0) worked around a hit and a walk in the seventh, fanning two.
Kody Clemens (solo) and Gabriel Rincones (two-run HR) hit home runs for the Phillies.
Tigers 10, Pirates 4
Jahmai Jones and Thayron Liranzo hit three-run shots to propel visiting Detroit past Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.
Trey Sweeney also homered for the Tigers, who scored four in the fourth and five in the seventh. Jackson Jobe (1-0) limited the Pirates to one run on two hits and struck out three in a three-inning start.
Henry Davis homered off Jobe and Darick Hall and Endy Rodriguez also went deep for the Pirates. Reliever Tim Mayza (1-1) gave up three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Red Sox 6, Mets 4
Masataka Yoshida racked up three RBIs on a ground-rule double and a single to lead Boston past visiting New York in Fort Myers, Fla.
Newcomer Alex Bregman went 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Red Sox, and fellow newcomer Walker Buehler (1-0) struck out four and yielded one hit in a two-inning start.
Jose Siri hit a three-run shot for the Mets in the third before Yoshida answered with his RBI single later that inning. Paul Blackburn (0-1) was tagged for four runs on three hits and two walks in 1 1/3 frames.
Rays 5, Twins 5
Luke Keaschall hit a run-scoring groundout in the ninth inning before Mickey Gasper plated the tying run on a two-out single as Minnesota drew with visiting Tampa Bay in Fort Myers.
Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach launched solo home runs for the Twins, who out-hit the Rays 10-9.
Junior Caminero hit two-run home runs off Twins starter Chris Paddack in the first and third innings to stake the Rays to a 4-0 lead. Rays starter Shane Baz threw three scoreless innings, scattering two hits, a walk and two Ks.
Nationals 4, Astros 3
Paul DeJong had a two-run home run in the third that proved to be the game-winner as Washington defeated host Houston in Palm Beach, Fla.
DeJong’s homer made it 4-1 after the Nationals scored on an error and Alex Call’s base hit in a two-run first. Starter Trevor Williams (1-0) scattered five hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings, limiting the Astros to one run and striking out two.
Jake Meyers had a pair of RBI singles for the Astros. Starter Ronel Blanco (0-1) was saddled with two unearned runs on three hits and a walk in two innings. He struck out four.
Marlins 5, Cardinals 3
Jared Serna went 2-for-2 with two runs, including a solo homer, and host Miami edged past St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.
Edward Cabrera was the first of eight Marlins pitchers and allowed one run on two hits in two innings. The seven relievers limited the Cardinals to just one more hit, with George Soriano (1-0) picking up the win.
Luken Baker brought the Cardinals within a run with a two-run shot in the seventh before Fenwick Trimble’s insurance run on an infield single boosted Miami. John King (0-1) was reached for three runs on five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in the fifth.
