Top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbia’s Laslo Djere 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in Spain.
Alcaraz, who won the tournament in 2022 and 2023, needed only 71 minutes to finish Djere and sets up a meeting with No. 5 seed Alex De Minaur of Australia, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.
Russia’s Karen Khachanov held off Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-4. He will face another Spaniard in the quarterfinals after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina saved eight of 11 break points in a 7-5, 6-4 upset of No. 4 Andre Rublev of Russia.
BMW Open
Belgium’s David Goffin rallied for an 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 win against Argentina’s Mariano Navone to reach the quarterfinals in Munich, Germany.
Goffin saved four break points in the decisive set and moved on to face fifth-seeded Francisco Cerundulo, also of Argentina, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko.
Also meeting in the final eight will be Belgium’s Zizou Bergs and Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan. Bergs beat 17-year-old Diego Dedura-Palomero of Germany 6-1, 6-1 in 69 minutes, while Marozsan knocked out fourth-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4.
