Josh Naylor drove in Geraldo Perdomo from third base with a chopping ground ball to first to cap a five-run ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for an 8-7 victory over the San Diego Padres in Phoenix on Saturday.
Pavin Smith, Gabriel Moreno and Alek Thomas singled to open the ninth off Padres closer Robert Suarez (1-2), who entered in a non-save situation. After Corbin Carroll struck out, Ketel Marte beat out an infield single to shortstop on a play that was changed on a video review to make it 7-4. Perdomo, who had two hits, tripled into the right field corner to drive in three, bringing up Naylor.
Eugenio Suarez had a three-run homer for the D-backs, who have won five in a row. Arizona starter Zac Gallen gave up six hits and was charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four. He leads the NL with 40 walks.
Gavin Sheets had three hits including a homer, and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each had two-run hits in a four-run San Diego seventh for a 5-3 lead, and the Padres tacked on two runs in their ninth for what appeared to be a safe cushion.
Dodgers 11, Giants 5
Clayton Kershaw went seven scoreless innings and Shohei Ohtani hit a pair of home runs as Los Angeles rolled to a victory over visiting San Francisco.
In his 61st career appearance against the Giants, and 59th start, Kershaw (2-0) allowed three hits with one walk. His five strikeouts moved him 12 away from becoming the 20th pitcher and fourth left-hander with 3,000.
Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (4-5) was roughed up for six runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, with a career-high five walks. Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam against position player Enrique Hernandez in the ninth inning as San Francisco lost for just the second time in its past 10 games.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 3
Hunter Dobbins threw six shutout innings to lead host Boston to a win over the New York Yankees.
Dobbins (4-1) was dominant, allowing just two hits and walking one. He struck out five in 82 pitches. Greg Weissert gave up a run in the ninth but earned his second save.
Rodon (8-5) gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and walked two in five-plus innings. He struck out four on 92 pitches. The left-hander had not lost in two months before losing 11-7 to the Red Sox in his previous start.
Reds 11, Tigers 1
Tyler Stephenson blasted a grand slam, Brady Singer tossed six strong innings, and visiting Cincinnati powered past Detroit.
Matt McLain hit a three-run homer, while Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer also homered for the Reds. Singer (7-4) allowed one run and four hits while recording four strikeouts.
Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (5-7) surrendered seven runs on five hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Wenceel Perez drove in the only run of the game for the Tigers.
Cubs 2, Pirates 1
Matthew Boyd threw six quality innings and Dansby Swanson hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning to propel Chicago to a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.
Boyd (6-3) allowed just one run on one hit — Andrew McCutchen’s solo homer in the first — across six innings for the Cubs, who have taken two of three from the Pirates before the series finale on Sunday. Daniel Palencia notched his sixth save in seven tries this season.
Pittsburgh rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed one run on five hits in his 5 1/3-inning stint, before Ryan Borucki (1-3) allowed Swanson’s solo homer in the sixth. In just the fifth start of his career, Burrows struck out eight and walked none.
Orioles 6, Angels 5
Cedric Mullins and Gary Sanchez, both fresh off the injured list, hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run sixth inning as host Baltimore defeated Los Angeles.
Jordan Westburg drove in two runs and Adley Rutschman, Coby Mayo and Mullins all racked up two hits as eight Orioles had at least one hit. Keegan Akin was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Felix Bautista notched his 14th save by pitching the ninth.
Luis Rengifo drilled two home runs and Mike Trout also homered for the Angels, while Taylor Ward picked up three hits and an RBI. Starter Tyler Anderson (2-4) was charged with six runs on nine hits in five-plus innings.
Phillies 3, Blue Jays 2
Max Kepler hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Philadelphia went on to beat visiting Toronto.
Kepler hit a 2-0 fastball by reliever Chad Green into the right field bleachers. Orion Kerkering picked up the win with a hitless inning in relief and Matt Strahm pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to garner his third save. Brandon Marsh had two hits for the Phillies, who won its third straight game.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Ernie Clement added a double, a single and scored a run for the Blue Jays, who lost their second straight game.
Rays 8, Mets 4
Junior Caminero homered to ignite a five-run fourth inning, while Taylor Walls doubled twice and knocked in two runs as visiting Tampa Bay stopped New York.
Drew Rasmussen (6-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings, fanning three, as Tampa Bay won for the 17th time in 23 games. The Rays handed New York just its second series loss in 13 series this season at Citi Field and tied Toronto for the American League’s top wild-card spot.
Tylor Megill (5-5) surrendered seven hits and six runs, three earned, over 3 2/3 innings and 82 pitches. He walked two and struck out five, succumbing to Tampa Bay’s second big inning in as many games.
Astros 3, Twins 2
Rookie Cam Smith bounced a first-pitch, walk-off single into center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Houston topped Minnesota to secure the three-game series.
Smith completed the rally started against Twins closer Jhoan Duran (4-2) by Christian Walker, who walked with one out, and extended by Jake Meyers’ two-out single. Smith’s hit made a winner out of closer Josh Hader (3-0), who struck out two in the top of the ninth. Yainer Diaz homered for Houston, while Brooks Lee went deep for Minnesota.
Astros right-hander Hunter Brown, who struck out a career-high 12, and his counterpart with the Twins, right-hander Joe Ryan, engaged in a riveting pitchers’ duel. Brown allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in seven innings, while Ryan allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
Marlins 4, Nationals 3
Jesus Sanchez had two hits including a home run, Calvin Faucher retired James Wood with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, and Miami beat Washington.
Liam Hicks and Dane Myers had two hits each for Miami, which has won three of its last four. Janson Junk (1-0) worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in a bullpen game, allowing two hits and striking out four. Faucher earned his seventh save.
Abrams and Call had two hits each for Washington, which has lost seven straight. Trevor Williams (3-8) gave up two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Athletics 4, Royals 0
Jacob Lopez allowed three hits and struck out nine across six scoreless innings and Max Muncy clubbed a two-run homer as the visiting Athletics blanked Kansas City.
Lawrence Butler also went deep, and Jacob Wilson recorded two hits to raise his average to .369. The A’s took the first two of this set after losing 14 straight on the road. Lopez (1-4), making his seventh career start over three seasons, yielded two hits to Maikel Garcia, a Salvador Perez single and walked one for his second career quality start.
The Royals’ Michael Lorenzen (4-7) also recorded a quality start while lasting six innings, but gave up three runs, three walks and four hits. Kansas City has dropped five consecutive games and six consecutive series at home, recording only three wins in 16 outings.
Braves 4, Rockies 1
Spencer Strider struck out a season-high 13 over six scoreless innings and Atlanta defeated Colorado for their third straight win.
Strider (1-5) allowed three hits and walked one to earn his first victory since missing nearly all of the 2024 season with Tommy John surgery. Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs and to pace the offense.
Chase Dollander (2-7) hurled six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Brenton Doyle’s two-out RBI single in the ninth scored Hunter Goodman.
Cardinals 8, Brewers 5
Nolan Gorman hit a three-run homer and Willson Contreras added a solo shot as visiting St. Louis snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Milwaukee.
Kyle Leahy (2-1) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Alec Burleson connected on two of the Cards’ 10 hits and drove in the game’s first run.
Jose Quintana (4-2) yielded seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Sal Frelick was one of three Brewers to produce a pair of hits and he drove in a pair.
Rangers 5, White Sox 4 (11 innings)
Adolis Garcia ripped a two-out single to score pinch runner Evan Carter with the winning run, lifting host Texas to an extra-inning victory over reeling Chicago.
The Rangers captured their third straight win and their sixth in their last seven outings. The White Sox, conversely, have dropped four straight. Jacob deGrom started for Texas and surrendered two runs over six innings. The Rangers then squandered one-run leads in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Garcia’s hit off Tyler Alexander (3-7) came after Texas wasted a bases-loaded opportunity with one out in the 10th and made a winner out of Jacob Latz (1-0), its sixth pitcher of the game. Chicago sent seven pitchers to the mound in a bullpen game. Mike Vasil started and went four scoreless innings.
Mariners 4, Guardians 3
Jorge Polanco grounded a bases-loaded single into center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Seattle rallied to defeat visiting Cleveland.
Dylan Moore raced home on a one-out wild pitch to tie the score. Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase struck out Julio Rodriguez before an intentional walk to Cal Raleigh re-loaded the bases. Polanco grounded a 1-1 cutter up the middle as the Mariners won for just the third time in their past 11 games.
Jose Ramirez homered for the Guardians, who lost for the seventh time in their past nine. Clase blew his third save opportunity of the season.
