White Sox release former All-Star Noah Syndergaard

The Chicago White Sox released veteran right-hander Noah Syndergaard on Sunday before he ever pitched for the major league team.

Syndergaard, who turns 33 on Aug. 29, rose to prominence during his run with the New York Mets. In 2016, Syndergaard pitched 183 2/3 innings, going 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA and 218 strikeouts. He was selected that season to the All-Star Game and finished eighth in the National League Cy Young Award voting.

However, injury struggles persisted, and the right-hander’s performance declined. In recent years, he had brief stints with the Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians. In 2023, his last year at the major league level, he had a combined 2-6 record with a 6.50 ERA and 1.387 WHIP in 18 games (all starts).

In June, Syndergaard signed a minor league contract with the White Sox. In six minor league outings, he pitched 23 1/3 innings with a 5.40 ERA and 14 strikeouts.

His career MLB statistics are a 59-47 record, 3.71 ERA, 216 walks and 928 strikeouts in 941 1/3 innings over 164 regular-season games (162 starts) from 2015-23. Toronto selected him in the first round (38th overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft before trading him to the Mets in December 2012.
